Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich
These grilled ham and cheese sandwiches are absolutely delicious. They are the kind of delicious grilled ham and cheese sandwich that you will find in a classic diner.
I love sandwiches…especially when they have melted cheese oozing out and a crunchy texture on the outside.
Quick and Easy Dinner
The grilled ham and cheese sandwich is a perfect quick meal. You can have one ready in just about 10 minutes. Two of them make a great meal, even for a hungry man.
How to make a grilled ham and cheese sandwich:
Note about the butter: Bring butter to room temperature before beginning. You want the butter to retain its shape, but not be melted.
Butter each slice of bread on both sides.
Heat a pan to a low-medium heat. Add the two slices of bread to the pan.
Cook until the bread begins to toast up. This will prevent the inside of the sandwich to get soggy. Flip the bread over.
Put two slices of cheese on each piece of bread. Yes, two. Remember that this is essentially a grilled cheese sandwich, so since cheese is one of the main ingredients, we are being generous. There nothing sadder in the culinary world than anticipating lots of melty cheese and getting a sad little amount. Think of how stingy some places are with the cheese on their pizzas. Sad, right?
In the same pan toss a stack a thinly sliced ham. Put as much as you want, but I suggest at least 6 slices, more would be better. Notice how the ham sizzles as it hits the pan. All the delicious flavors are waking up. It smells good, right? Flip the ham over after a few seconds.
I did one sandwich with Cheddar Cheese and the second sandwich with Swiss Cheese. They are both good melting cheeses are classic in grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Which one is better? You will have to try it and be the judge.
Cover the pan with a lid. Cook until the cheese starts to melt.
Slide the stack of ham on one of the slices of bread.
Sandwich it with the second slice of bread (hence the name sandwich).
Eat whole or slide to a cutting board and cut in half using a knife.
If you want to make this sandwich even more amazing, cook an egg (or two) over easy or over medium and add it to your sandwich. You will have the most delicious ham and cheese breakfast sandwich. Seriously, amazing!
Enjoy!
