Upside Down Apple Tarts
If you are looking for a simple recipe to make with one or two extra apples and some puff pastry, this is it. These Upside Down Apple Tarts are delicious and easy to make.
Puff pastry is one of my favorite staple ingredients to keep in the freezer just incase I am in the mood to make something simple and delicious, such as my Cherry Cheese Danish rolls.
While these tarts can make a nice addition to the breakfast menu, they can also make a fantastic dessert.
Ingredients for 6 Upside Down Apple Tarts:
- 1 to 2 sweet apples such as honey crisp
- 1 sheet puff pastry dough, defrosted and cut into 6 rectangles
- 6 generous teaspoon of honey
- Ground cinnamon as needed
- 3 teaspoons granulated sugar
- 6 teaspoons light brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons cold butter cut into small chunks
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon heavy cream
- 1 generous teaspoon confectioners (powdered) sugar
Steps:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Cut the apple into quarters. Take out the core and seeds. Slice each quarters into thin slices. I used a mandolin slicer but you and use whatever method is best for you.
- Spread a teaspoon of honey on 6 sections of the parchment paper. Sprinkle the granulated sugar on top, along with a small dash of cinnamon. The honey will give the tarts that’s sticky sweet goodness and the sugar will help the tops caramelize.
- Lay a few slices of apples on the honey mixture.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar on the apples, along with an additional dash of cinnamon.
- Top each apple with a little bit of the butter.
- Spread a puff pastry piece over each bundle of apples.
- In a small container, beat the egg with the cream to make an egg wash. Brush each puff pastry with some of the mixture. This will give it that beautiful, golden color.
- Bake in preheated oven for about 18 minutes.
- With a spatula, flip each upside down apple tart right side up.
- Return to the oven and bake about 4 to 5 additional minutes.
- Take the tray out of the oven a sprinkle each pastry with a little powdered sugar.
Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
For a delicious treat, serve with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
