Denny’s Moons Over My Hammy Copycat Breakfast Sandwich
If you love Denny’s Moons Over My Hammy Breakfast Sandwich, this is a copycat recipe that will allow you to make it at home.
So, when I go to a restaurant, I usually have a handful of favorite menu items. At Denny’s one of these favorite items is a breakfast sandwich called, Moons over my Hammy. I order that sandwich almost every time I visit Denny’s.
What makes the Moons Over My Hammy irresistible is the combination of that toasted sourdough bread, with those fluffy scrambled eggs, melted cheddar cheese on top of the eggs, thinly sliced ham that is grilled to deliciousness and sits on melted Swiss cheese. Ok, so you get the idea. I love that sandwich!
Now, I know Denny’s Restaurant is open 24 hours a day, but sometimes, you get a craving and just don’t want to get out of the house.
The best part of being able to make that sandwich at home is that you can make it any time you like. You can also make as many sandwiches as you like. No need for sides. Making them at home is more cost effective if you have more people to cook for. You can feed four people for the price of one. What’s not to like?
When you make the sandwich at home, you can also make changes as you like. For example, you don’t like sourdough bread, you can switch it to a white bread or a low carb option. It’s your choice.
How to make Denny’s Moons Over My Hammy Copycat Breakfast Sandwich:
Prep the ingredients and materials:
This sandwich can be made quickly if you have the ingredients ready to go.
You will need two slices of bread (ideally, sourdough), a slice of Swiss cheese, a slice of cheddar cheese, two eggs, and plenty of butter. You will also need two pans: a large one and a small one; plus a flat spatula.
For the grilled cheese bread and ham:
Bring butter to room temperature before beginning. You want the butter to be spreadable, but not be melted.
Butter each slice of bread on both sides.
Heat a large pan to a low-medium heat. Add the two slices of bread to the pan.
Cook the bread until it begins to toast up. This will prevent the inside of the sandwich from getting soggy. Flip the bread over.
Add the Swiss cheese on one slice of bread and the cheddar cheese on the other slice of bread.
Add the ham to the same pan. Flip the ham after a few seconds and toss it around until the slices warm up.
Cook until the cheese starts to melt. If you want to speed up the process, you can cover the pan for a few seconds.
For the Eggs:
Whisk two eggs in a small bowl. If you like, add some salt and pepper.
Add a nice sized chunk of cold butter to the eggs. This is my tip to making super creamy eggs.
Heat a small pan to medium-high heat. Do this as soon as you add the bread to the other pan.
Add the eggs with the cold butter to the pan. The butter will melt into the eggs as they cook and make them super creamy.
Notice that the eggs will start to set immediately.
Now, lower the heat to low-medium, and gently push from the bottom up.
The result will be creamy, fluffy scrambled eggs.
To assemble your breakfast sandwich:
Pile the ham on top of the slice of bread with the Swiss cheese.
Add the eggs on top of the ham.
Sandwich the other slice of bread on top. Sandwich, get it? 😂
Transfer your sandwich to a cutting board if you plan on slicing it in half.
With a sharp knife, cut through the center of the sandwich. Enjoy!
